The United States has put on a lavish ceremonial welcome for the Prime Minister's first full day in Washington, firming the alliance at a time of growing global tension and uncertainty.

Attended by dignitaries and celebrities, Donald Trump treated Scott Morrison to only the second state dinner of his presidency, heaping praise on his special Australian guest.

But there's no such thing as a free meal.

The pair discussed the trade war with China and America's simmering confrontation with Iran.
